What organizations test and regulate cat food and cat nutrition?
There is a substantial number of organizations, both public and private
who are responsible for regulating cat food or at least some aspect of cat
nutrition. Here is a partial list of some of those organizations that
pertain to cat food nutrition and other pet food nutrition and
manufacturing.
The Association of American Feed Control Officials, or (AAFCO) publishes
minimum feeding protocols cat food.
These are minimum testing protocols for the purpose substantiating the
nutritional suffiency of pet foods from feeding trials and determining
metabolizable energy cat foods.
In addition, AAFCO is the official source of data for pet food labeling,
ingredient definitions, as well as standardized feed testing methods.
The FDA regulates health claims made by cat food manufacturers.
The USDA, meanwhile is in charge of inspecting animal ingredients used in
cat food(and other pet foods) to ensure proper handling.
The National Research Council, meanwhile, also known as NRC, nonprofit
organization that evaluates and compiles research that has been conducted
by others.
At one time the NRC publications on nutrient requirements for cats were
considered the recognized authority of label claims on commercial pet
foods.
The Pet Food Institute, or the PFI was established in the year in 1958 as
the national trade association of dog and cat food manufacturers in the
United States.
Each particular state in the United Staes is responsible for adopting and
enforcing pet food regulations.
